Is Drew Pearson high?

As I've written before, I'm a huge fan of Dallas Cowboys history, which includes the great Drew Pearson. But yesterday on ESPN Radio in Dallas, Pearson said something that made me wonder if he was drunk or high on something. The following is his exact quote:

"Here's my prediction: The Cowboys will win the NFC, go to the Super Bowl and coming out of the AFC is going to be the Houston Texans. And it's going to be an all-Texas Super Bowl in New Jersey -- in the winter, in the cold weather, in the snow and all that. Two dome teams, haven't played in the cold weather all season, and now they're going up to Jersey and play in the cold weather.
"And that's only if Houston makes it."

What is Pearson smoking? Does he honestly think the Cowboys are ready this year to make a Super Bowl run? Teams don't go from 8-8 two years in a row to going to the Super Bowl. Now I understand if a team makes it to the playoffs, anything is possible. But take a look at the Cowboys. They just aren't there yet. I think they have pieces that can improve this team, but they are not ready. Cowboys personnel and former players need to stop with these Super Bowl predictions. Just a few short weeks ago Stephen Jones, executive Vice President of the Dallas Cowboys, predicted that the Cowboys will be Super Bowl contenders this year. I don't see how they can say that. Look at the different positions:

Offensive line: Tyrone Smith is the only lineman you can count on. We don't know if Travis Fredrick is going to do what we need him to do, Phil Costa and Doug Free are absolutely horrendous, and I can't name any more offensive linemen which shows just how mediocre they really are. So to me, you can't rely on the linemen to actually be any good.

Quarterback: Tony Romo is, as I've stated before, a good backup quarterback at best. He isn't good enough to be a starter in the NFL. In games when they are suppose to win against bad teams, he plays great. When the Cowboys need him to step up and be a great quarterback, he chokes under the pressure. He can't win the big one therefore the thought of the Cowboys winning the Super Bowl this year is absurd.

Runningback: This is one of the few positions on the offense that I believe the Cowboys are decent at. If healthy, DeMarco Murray is a very good runningback. But he has been too injury prone his entire career. A lot of that can be attributed to a bad offensive line. The new runningback, Joseph Randle, had a great career at Oklahoma State. Watching him at OSU makes me believe that he will make a good runningback in the NFL. My only concern is that he won't have the offensive line he needs in Dallas to be a good runningback.

Wide Reciever: This is the offensive position that I believe the Cowboys excel at. Dez Bryant has only gotten better every year he has been in Dallas. Terrance Williams, drafted from Baylor, was one of Robert Griffin III's favorite receiver. He has good speed and good hands. He will be a big upside for the receiving core. The weakness at wide reciever is Miles Austin. Jerry Jones jumped the gun and paid this guy too much after one good year. He has sucked ever since.

Tight End: There isn't much more I can say about Jason Whitten. He is a future Hall Of Famer and the best in the NFL.

Defensively, I believe the Cowboys have one of the best defenses in the NFL when healthy. Sean Lee, DeMarcus Ware, Bruce Carter, Mo Claiborne, and Brandon Carr make up the nucleus of a defense that I believe will thrive under new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

Drew Pearson claims that the Cowboys and Texans will face off in the Super Bowl in New Jersey. He might be right...about Houston. But when it comes to the Cowboys, I'm sorry to say this about a legend but I believe he is off his rocker. The Cowboys might be better, but their goal right now should be to make the playoffs and not worry right now about winning a Super Bowl when they just don't have the pieces to do so.
